What is a Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care specialist?
A diplomate in the college of veterinary emergency and critical care (DACVECC) is a highly trained specialist who works closely with your family veterinarian, emergency clinicians and other specialists to ensure that your pet gets comprehensive care tailored to their needs. After becoming a veterinarian, veterinary criticalists undergo additional training consisting of a 1 year internship followed by a 3 year residency and rigorous board exam.
Because of their unique training in stabilizing the cardiovascular and respiratory systems, in addition to medical emergencies, criticalist often assist with anesthesia of patients in fragile health, recovery from complex or invasive surgeries, and managing complications of chronic disease. A criticalist provides care during a crisis in health until your pet is healthy enough to continue care with your family veterinarian or specialist.
